The Candle Flickered
The candle flickered
In the hunger and pain
Of war torn Africa.
Where disease struck amid poverty
And people fled their homes into the wilderness.
But wait….it burned brighter finding hope in the darkness.
Aid with medicine, food and shelter,
Came from a caring world
And some were saved.
The candle flickered
In the work of children,
Toiling in the gloom of India.
Where boys and girls disappeared.
In debt, they were hidden from the light of day,
It faded as the long hours passed for scant reward.
But wait…it burned brighter, a future light in the darkness,
As schools were founded
And some were educated.
The candle flickered,
In the desolation and destruction
Of South America.
Where rainforests were cut down.
Animals and birds cried with the sound of diggers.
It died as the animals lost their habitat.
But wait… it burned brighter, sunlight caught in the darkness,
The forest canopy returned, recycling chosen
And trees were saved and planted.
The candle flickered,
In the selfish greed
Of modern society.
Where money was worshipped, power corrupted.
Finding their own drugs, many stumbled and fell.
It flared, disappearing in the neon lights of the city.
But wait…it burned brighter, a beacon in the darkness.
Communities reached out with friendship
And the lost and lonely were comforted.
The candle flickered,
It shone into the darkest places on Earth,
A glimmer of hope, when all seemed gone.
Its rays pierced the hearts of mankind,
Finding those who could carry its flame to the future.
Burning brightly within them,
They held the flame of God’s love
Shown through his Son, Jesus Christ,
The Light of the World.
